UPS- Learning is not just to Know

Coming into UPS, I knew how to pass classes and get through tough chapters, I even knew a thing or two about what I would be learning, but I never knew I would actually get educated. My high school was very big about getting students prepared for the future, so math classes were big on calculators and I learned how to do all the problems, and we learned sure, but nothing like this. Here, getting the answer matters, but not as much as knowing how to get the answer and why the answer is the answer. I actually have to know and be smart- no guessing the answers on tests because that won't cut it. Proving your answer is the only thing that matters. At first I was upset- we are going into such a quick technology advancing world and so why should it matter if I know le'hosipitals rule when I can just plug it into my calculator and get the answer? After all, in life, you will get to use a calculator. But then you don't know, you don't think, you just do. How do we advance in this world if we aren't thinking? I am very happy I am getting a liberal arts educations. Now I will know how to think. And I'm also glad I'm getting a Puget Sound education because perfection isn't a goal, its a requirement. =)
