Habitat for Humanity

About two weeks ago, I finally got to volunteer here in Tacoma for Habitat for Humanity. In high school I worked with them some and wanted to continue here in college. It was great getting to go early on a Saturday to help out my new community. They were working on three houses in a culsdesac that had many other habitat houses. I moved rocks with my team, which was rather difficult, but still great to be out helping. During devotion time, a long time member and worker for Habitat talked about where Habitat originated. Many people think that it was Jimmy Carter who started the foundation, but it was actually a man named Millard Fuller who was a self earned millionaire by the time he was in his mid-20's. He and his wife Linda decided that there was no need for such money so they gave it all up and decided to pursue a life of Christian service. Millard believed that as Jesus says in the bible, every single person should have a simple, decent and affordable place to live, so as he set out to start Habitat for Humanity, that was it's goal and from there it has grown. The people who receive the house must work 300 hours for Habitat building their house or their neighbors and then receive their house at no interest mortgage. Jimmy Carter brought the fame and popularity to Habitat that it needed to get off the ground. Worldwide, Habitat has now built more than 300,000 for 1 1/2 million people after 29 years of developing Habitat for Humanity in 100 nations. I hope I can continue to help out this great foundation. Check out there website here and get involved here!

Julianna, thank you for sharing your experiences as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Millard and I visited Tacoma several years ago and it's good to know that Habitat is still going strong there. Worldwide, Habitat has now built more than 300,000 for 1 1/2 million people. After 29 years developing Habitat for Humanity in 100 nations, we started a new organization in 2005 called the Fuller Center for Housing. So far, we are working in 56 cities in the US and in 17 other countries. To learn more: FullerCenter.org
btw, I enjoy being outdoors, too, whether it's working in the yard and my favorite, hiking trails.
