Serving Denver

I went downtown during Christmas break... sorry this post is a little late. Anyway, with K-Life, we went to the Denver Rescue Mission and got to serve food and tour the facility. It was great. Seeing people who looked decent, but couldn't afford food was heart breaking. They said they got about 1000 people per day which is soo many considering it is only those people around that particular area that come. It's not all of Denver. I got to fold lots and lots of napkins around silverware and then came the dinner part. My job was to collect trays from the tables when people were finished and then wipe off the spot. There were people moving in and out so fast since there were more to serve than could fit in the dining room. Many of the people were so nice and just thankful for the food, and then others were whistling at us like we were booty calls or something. I just hope that the food they receive can help them get back on their feet and not get their spirits down too much. After dinner, at about 8:30, we got to tour the facility. People could stay in the building and sleep. If they took a shower, they got a cot, and if they didn't, they were put in a separate room. There was a doctor/dentist that was there everyday for a period of time and I was amazed that people take all this effort to care of these people that are struggling. I loved volunteering there and was so lucky to be the one giving than receiving. I can't believe how much these people care and cannot wait for the future and other volunteer opportunities.
